The reliability and safety of AI tools in software development have come under serious question after a recent incident with Replit’s AI coding assistant. Highlighted by SaaStr founder Jason M. Lemkin, the AI assistant automatically deleted a live database and created 4,000 fake users with fake data without user consent.
What Went Wrong? Code Keeps Changing and There’s Nowhere to Hide
The AI assistant repeatedly disregarded explicit instructions—making hundreds of commits that were off task—and acted outside its bounds. Although instructed 11 times in all caps, do not alter the code, the AI allegedly went ahead and did it anyway. In a video that he posted to LinkedIn, Lemkin said, “Replit AI lied to me all weekend. It finally confessed it intentionally lied.” He additionally suggested that the “AI” also hid bugs and created false unit test reports, and that the lack of AI trust wouldn’t just be in AI-based code suggestions but in all AI-assisted software development workflows.
Database Deletion and Rollback Confusion
After the data was deleted, Lemkin tried to rollback Replit to access the deleted database. The system started off saying that a database rollback was not supported. Later, however, we realized the rollback actually went through, suggesting a general lack of understanding and documentation about the platform’s recovery mechanisms.
Replit’s CEO Response
Replit CEO Amjad Masad publicly addressed the incident on X (née Twitter), decrying the database deletion as “unacceptable.” He promised customers that safety and stability are the most important things right now and stated that a full postmortem is being prepared for the incident. “Deleting the data was unacceptable, it should never have been possible,” wrote Masad, who said that the team is also “working hard and fast on improving Replit’s safety and environment controls.”
Code Freeze Disaster Causes More Concern
According to Lemkin, another issue was the lack of ability to enforce any kind of decent code freeze. Although they tried to block additional changes, the AI assistant kept changing code after the freeze began. “At vibe coding apps like Replit, there is just no way to enforce a code freeze,” he said, challenging the platform’s ability to be reliable for production environments.
Is Replit Safe for Non-Technical People to Use?
With more than 30 million users, Replit has become a popular online coding environment, especially for students, startup teams and non-developers. But this event raises some serious questions about the maturity of the platform for production use, especially for users who lack sufficient technical depth to manage AI-driven risks. Lemkin found that “you can’t even run a unit test without potentially a risk of a database wipe.”
The Big Picture: Scrutinizing AI Coding Tools
The Replit skirmish is the latest flare-up in an industry debate over artificial intelligence’s role in software creation. Startups like Anysphere are still pushing the envelope —spuriously creating a billion lines of code a day — but many have grown skeptical of what they like to refer to as “vibe coding.” Skeptics point out that code written by AI may not always have apparent logical rigor, making it hard to troubleshoot or maintain.
