Meta Rolls Out Paid Features for Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp

Meta Rolls Out Paid Features for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp

Meta has officially stepped into a new era of monetising social media platforms. Meta’s Head of Product, Naomi Gleithas, recently announced paid subscription services on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, making this perhaps the biggest step Meta has ever taken to monetise itself apart from advertisements.

The new plans: Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus & WhatsApp Plus have now been launched worldwide, providing users access to a wide range of premium features for a monthly fee.

Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are priced at $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus will cost $2.99 per month.

According to Meta, the subscriptions are meant for users who want “something more from their social apps,” especially the creators, businesses, and heavy users who need extra engagement, analytics, and customization features.

Naomi also revealed that the company is now preparing to launch more advanced subscription offerings tied to Meta AI, creators, businesses, and even AI-powered smart glasses under a larger umbrella brand called “Meta One.”

What Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus & WhatsApp Plus Offer

Instagram Plus has become the most feature-rich among the three. The focus is squarely on Stories:

  • Subscribers can see exactly how many people rewatched their content
  • Create extra audience lists
  • Keep Stories live for longer than the standard 24-hour window.
  • Users can browse other people’s Stories without showing up on the viewer list
  • spotlight their own Stories once a week for a visibility boost and post directly to their profile highlights without it spilling into their followers’ main feeds.

Additionally, there are also cosmetic and customization-focused upgrades such as animated “Super Heart” reactions, exclusive app icons, customizable bio fonts, and extra profile pins.

Facebook Plus is expected to offer many of the same audience engagement and profile customization features, while WhatsApp Plus is bringing a more messaging-focused approach.

The WhatsApp subscription introduces:

  • app themes
  • custom ringtones
  • premium stickers
  • additional pinned chats
  • expanded chat organization tools

All of these are aimed at making the messaging experience more personalized.

The newly launched “Plus” plans focus on providing more social and personalization tools. They are not here to replace the free versions of the apps. Meta has even clarified that these subscriptions are completely optional and will exist alongside Meta Verified, the company’s existing paid verification service.

Meta’s Bigger AI Subscription Strategy

Apart from social subscriptions, Meta is also concurrently piloting premium artificial intelligence subscriptions in its forthcoming “Meta One” ecosystem. It has been confirmed that the two subscription models – Meta One Plus and Meta One Premium – will commence tests next month in selected countries like Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia.

Meta One Plus will reportedly cost $7.99 per month, while Meta One Premium will be priced at $19.99 per month.

The higher-priced tier is expected to provide users with more powerful AI capabilities, including deeper reasoning for complex queries, higher compute access, and expanded image and video generation tools across Meta’s apps.

The company says Meta AI will continue to remain free for casual users, but premium plans will target users who require heavier AI usage and advanced functionality, a strategy increasingly adopted across the tech industry as companies race to monetise generative AI products.

What’s in for Creators & Businesses

Meta will be launching standalone subscription tiers for creators and enterprises as well. These subscription plans are expected to offer advanced analytics, better visibility in search and feeds, tools to grow audiences, clickable URLs in Instagram Stories and Reels, account management features, and even advanced scheduling tools

Meta is reportedly working on some advanced options that will allow creators to rank better in searches, improve discoverability, and manage collaborations and audience engagement in a much better way.

Industry analysts view Meta’s subscription expansion as part of a broader trend across social media and technology platforms. Companies including Snapchat, Telegram, X, and YouTube have all introduced premium subscription services in recent years as advertising markets become more competitive and AI development costs continue rising.

Why Now?

The move signals a significant strategic shift for Meta. Its business has historically been heavily dependent on advertising revenue across its platforms. However, with Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp already reaching billions of users worldwide, growth opportunities through user expansion have become increasingly limited.

At the same time, Meta’s heavy spending on AI infrastructure and data centers is making it imperative for the company to find additional sources of recurring revenue.

According to reports, Meta is expected to spend between $125 billion and $145 billion this year on AI infrastructure alone, including advanced computing systems and next-generation AI products.
